‘Friday’s Child’ Trailer: Imogen Poot & Tye Sheridan Star For Terrence Malick’s Pupil A.J. Edwards

A.J. Edwards’ latest film, “Friday’s Child,” looks like a stunner. And if his style seems a little familiar, it’s because he worked very closely with director Terrence Malick for several years. In fact, “Friday’s Child” is actually a reunion for Edwards and star Tye Sheridan. At 10 years old, Sheridan’s first ever role was in Malick’s “The Tree of Life” which Edwards worked on. At the SXSW premiere earlier this year, the two joked that they have now “come full circle.”

Now, “Friday’s Child” is tackling life after foster care. The official synopsis can be read below.

Fresh out of foster care at age 18, a young drifter turns to petty crime to survive, and discovers an impossible love in an unlikely friend.

Star Sheridan spoke to Deadline at the festival about how the film handled the sensitive subject matter. “For us, I think making this movie, knowing that there are so many kids out there who grow up in the foster system it was important to tap into that truth and speak to the heart of that.”

Edwards, who both wrote and directed “Friday’s Child,” has assembled a cast full of talented actors. In addition to Sheridan, Imogen Poots, Jeffrey Wright, Brett Butler, and Caleb Landry Jones all star.

In his time with Malick, Edwards served as an editor and helped cast some of Malick’s most well known films, including “The New World,” “The Tree of Life,” and “To the Wonder.” That experience, however, didn’t play to Edwards’ advantage when it came time for his directorial debut “The Better Angels.” Our review for it actually mentioned that it “borders on self-serious parody…” and basically uses a “virtual checklist of every stylistic trope” made famous by his mentor. Ouch.

Hopefully “Friday’s Child” turns out better. Its SXSW premiere earned mixed reviews that mainly praised Sheridan’s performance. The film is now on to compete at the Shanghai International Film Festival and awaits U.S. distribution.
