Despite limping to the finish line, “Game of Thrones” finished its legendary HBO run on top. And due to that success, the network isn’t being deterred by fan petitions or social media outcry — more ‘Thrones’ is on the way. We already know that the pilot for one potential prequel is being filmed now (or soon… it’s so mysterious, isn’t it?). But as was recently revealed, it appears that HBO is looking at a second potential prequel, focused on the villainous House Targaryen.
When it was initially reported that the untitled prequel series about the Targaryens would be moving forward with writer Ryan Condal, there wasn’t much to say about the potential plot of the series, except that it would be set hundreds of years before the events of ‘Thrones’ and would primarily focus on the dragon-loving House.

However, according to EW, it appears the new prequel is actually going to follow the events of a story that was recently written by none other than George R.R. Martin, himself. Even though Martin is only attached to the new series as Executive Producer, it appears that HBO is looking to adapt the story he published in the recent book “Fire and Blood.”
The novel focused on the Targaryen history that spans over 150 years, ending with the famous Dance of Dragons. That battle, roughly 200 years before the ‘Thrones’ history we saw in the series, features two warring factions of House Targaryen fighting each other for control of the family’s future. The story covers the reigns of both Aegon III and King Jaehaerys I.
For fans of the ‘Thrones’ TV series, this sounds like the closest to the original series, as compared to the other announced prequel. The first one, which is co-created by Martin and Jane Goldman, is said to take place well before “Fire and Blood” and focus on the mystery surrounding The Long Night.
Obviously, just because HBO is developing a series doesn’t mean the plans are set in stone. However, it does appear that the network is moving full steam ahead with ‘Thrones’ plans, so those that were hoping the lackluster ending of the original series would kill off any future spin-offs are going to be disappointed.
