Gareth Edwards To Direct A New Sci-Fi Film For New Regency

It’s been more than three years since Gareth Edward’s last feature, the billion-dollar-grossing “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” was released in theaters. And since then, people have been wondering what the filmmaker would have next. Well, it appears that he’s not done genre films just yet.

According to Variety, Edward’s has struck a deal with New Regency to write and direct a new sci-fi film for the studio. There’s no word on what the plot might be, but the report claims that casting is currently underway and production could begin as early as this summer.

Gareth Edward’s career, thus far, has been fairly unconventional and a bit controversial. He scored his big break as the director of the indie sci-fi film “Monsters.” After that film gained some notoriety, the filmmaker landed the opportunity to reboot “Godzilla” in 2014 with the well-received monster film. After that, as we know, he was announced as one of the first filmmakers to tackle the new generation of “Star Wars” films with the aforementioned “Rogue One.”

However, production on “Rogue One” was less-than-smooth. Reports began to surface that the film was in trouble and extensive reshoots were required, as speculation that filmmaker Tony Gilroy came in to help “save” the film. While Gilroy has talked about the situation a bit in public, Edwards and Lucasfilm have not confirmed any of that speculation.

Regardless, “Rogue One” went on to earn more than $1 billion worldwide and studios began to anticipate what project Edwards would want to tackle next. Now, we know that he’s got a sci-fi film ready to go. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to learn more.
