Despite a whole fourteen years passing since his last directorial effort “Nil By Mouth,” starring Ray Winstone and Kathy Burke among others (a furiously brutal portrait of alcoholism, family and abuse, and an outstanding film), it looks like renowned thespian Gary Oldman is now planning another turn behind the camera, with one particularly high-calibered British talent already in his sights.
“I think I’m gonna do something with Colin Firth,” Oldman told U.K. Esquire [via DailyMail] in a recent interview. “It was something I’d been thinking about for a while, I can’t say what it is, but it’s a remake, and when I worked with Colin [on “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy“] I thought: here’s the guy to do it with.”
It’s anyone’s guess what project Oldman has in mind, but we’re pretty confident it won’t be any run-of-the-mill remake. After all, this is an actor who is increasingly selective in his choices and in the last few years has worked with auteurs Christopher Nolan, John Hillcoat and Alfonso Cuaron. The prospect of a collaboration between last year’s Best Actor winner Firth and Oldman, potentially a player in the upcoming award-season, is one we’ll definitely keep our eyes on.
Filmmaking wise, Oldman has done a small amount of directing work since his debut and only feature thus far, “Nil By Mouth,” particularly in the music video world — as recently as last year, the actor helmed a music video for L.A-based singer-songwriter Jonathan Clark, for whom he also lended his pipes for the artist’s debut album, I’m Just Sayin’.
