Find Ari Aster‘s 2019 cult horror film “Midsommar” a little too self-serious? Well, director Steffen Haars has a remedy for you: “Get Away,” a slasher comedy about a family who goes on vacation to a remote Swedish isle with a sinister secret and somehow retain their British pluck as murders pile up around them.
It begs the question: why didn’t anyone think of this idea sooner? A comedic riff on “The Wicker Man” and its ilk sounds a charming sit for horror fans, even if “Get Away” remains a minor lark of a film. And with Nick Frost as the family’s Dad, there’s sure to be plenty of laughs in this one, too.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Get Away,” courtesy of IFC Films and Shudder:
A family’s vacation to a remote getaway takes an unexpected turn when they discover the island they’re on is inhabited by a serial killer.
Along with Frost, “Get Away” also stars Aisling Bea, Sebastian Croft, Maisie Ayres, and Eero Miloniff. Frost also pens the film’s screenplay.
Producers on “Get Away” include Frost Lee Kim, John Hegeman, Aram Tertzakian, Nick Spicer, and Maxime Cottray. Executive producers include Vince Totino, Nate Bolotin, Pip Ngo, Patrick Fischer, Jennifer Eriksson, Simon Lewis, Julia Stuart, and Laura Grange.
“Get Away” had its world premiere at Fantastic Fest last Friday, and it won’t be long until it hits theaters on December 6. The movie then streams exclusively on Shudder, with a premiere date sometime in 2025.
