Well, it didn’t take long for the new “Ghostbusters” to team up with the classic “Ghostbusters,” right? After “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” writer/director Jason Reitman handed off the franchise and seemingly went back to the world of humanistic comedies. But he didn’t leave it in the lurch and remains a co-writer, producer, and executive producer on the project. The newest edition in the franchise, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” is directed by Reitman’s writing partner on the first film, Gil Kenan, who is known for directing “City of Ember” (2008), the supernatural horror film “Poltergeist” (2015).

After spending most of the first film in Oklahoma, ‘Frozen Empire’ takes the franchise back to its classic New York area code digs. The film centers on the discovery of an ancient artifact that unleashes an evil force; Ghostbusters, new and old, must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.
The film stars the new generation from ‘Afterlife,’ Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O’Connor, and Logan Kim; the classic generation from Ivan Reitman’s original films, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts, plus some new members of the ensemble played by Kumail Nanjiani, and Patton Oswalt.
Here’s the official synopsis:
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse—to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an army of ghosts that casts a death chill upon the city, Ghostbusters, new and old, must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.
Released in 2021, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” only grossed $204 million worldwide, but given it still during the pandemic, leading into the winter, it’s not a bad figure overall. Hence, Sony gave a sequel another shot. The filmmakers hope to do more, too, and have ideas for additional sequels, but let’s see how ‘Frozen Empire’ does when it opens in theaters on March 22.
