Gia Coppola Directs Jason Schwartzman & Kirsten Dunst In Short 'Non Plus One'

Yet another Coppola has decided to get behind the camera. Gia Coppola – granddaughter of Francis Ford and niece to Sofia – has co-directed, along with Tracy Antonopoulos, a short film entitled “Non Plus One” starring her cousin Jason Schwartzman and Kirsten Dunst.

Created to celebrate the launch of fashion label Opening Ceremony’s spring line (and consequently featuring the actors wearing the clothing) the short makes no bones about being a tribute to the films of the French New Wave and practically reads like a dissertation on the techniques and shot compositions of Godard’s best known films. Scored to “Is This Sound Okay?” from the album “Davy” by Schwartzman’s musical alter ego Coconut Records, the film is a breezily enjoyable boy-meets-girl tale. It plays like something made with friends which adds to its off the cuff feel and sans dialogue, it sort of plays like a home video postcard of a passing relationship. Dunst, who has sung backing vocals on Coconut Records’ “Summer Day” and starred with Schwartzman in “Marie Antoinette” (directed by Sofia, natch) clearly enjoys working with the actor and we frankly don’t remember the last time she was this charming on camera, but we like it.

With Gia recently graduating from Bard College, and Tracy still attending NYU’s Gallatin School, we have no idea if they will return to filmmaking again but we can imagine being an accountant or salesman at Coppola’s Thanksgiving dinner people is probably a very lonely proposition.

As for Opening Ceremony, the boutique has created a series of flipbooks for Spike Jonze’s forthcoming robot love story short “I’m Here.” Click here to check them out.
