Terry Gilliam's 'The Man Who Killed Don Quixote' Has (Finally) Secured US Distribution For Spring 2019

Rejoice, American fans of Terry Gilliam! After months, and months, of controversy, the filmmaker’s latest, “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” is finally going to hit US soil in 2019.

Screen Media has just announced that the distributor has bought the US rights to Gilliam’s long-awaited film and plans to release it in March. For those not familiar with the long and well-documented saga of bringing ‘Don Quixote’ to the big screen, we’ve covered it extensively over the last year.

Long story short, Gilliam’s film has been in development for over 20 years, with numerous stops and starts during that time. However, the filmmaker finally was able to secure financing and completed work on the film. ‘Don Quixote’ was then given a premiere date at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and was picked up for distribution by Amazon Studios. However, a legal battle ensued and after the film’s Cannes debut, distribution has been up in the air.

Enter Screen Media.

“Terry Gilliam is a true auteur and his latest film does not disappoint. It is the perfect pairing of a film with a filmmaker, the story of Don Quixote, a man who believes in things that seemingly no one else believes in, until finally, they share his vision,” said David Fannon, President of Screen Media. “Screen Media is thrilled that US audiences will finally get to see Terry Gilliam’s quest.”

Now, a specific release date, and an exact number of theaters, is still to be determined. That being said, this is the first time since Amazon backed out of its deal that ‘Don Quixote’ has had a planned US release date. Pretty much the entire rest of the world has had the film premiere, with the US the really only major territory without a release date.

So, US Gilliam fans, many of which have been following this film’s production, will finally get a chance outside of festivals to see “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” in March 2019.
