'The Glorias' Trailer: Julianne Moore & Alicia Vikander Both Star As Gloria Steinem In Julie Taymor's Film

LD Entertainment and Roadside Attractions‘ upcoming Gloria Steinem biopic, aptly titled “The Glorias,” was scheduled to debut in theaters sometime this fall. However, with the pandemic still making theatrical debuts a bit precarious, the distributors have decided to skip the big screen and release Julie Taymor’s latest feature directly on Amazon Prime Video and VOD.

And as seen in the new teaser for “The Glorias,” the feature is definitely a film you’re going to want to check out on whatever screen you can. (Just not a smartphone, for Martin Scorsese’s sake.) In the film, multiple actresses portray the iconic feminist in a story that spans Steinem’s life from when she was younger all the way to the 1977 National Women’s Conference and beyond.

The film stars Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Bette Midler, Janelle Monáe, Lorraine Toussaint, Lulu Wilson, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Kimberly Guerrero. As mentioned, the film comes from director Julie Taymor, who is probably best known for previous films such as “Across the Universe” and “Frida.” She co-wrote “The Glorias” alongside Sarah Ruhl.

In our review for the film, we said, “‘The Glorias’ stumbles when it plays the notes of a conventional biopic. It is only when Julie Taymor starts diving into the extraordinary work of Gloria Steinem, and the women that made her who she is, that the film blossoms into something special.”

“The Glorias” is expected to debut on Amazon Prime Video and VOD on September 30. You can watch the teaser below.

Here’s the synopsis:

Journalist, fighter, and feminist Gloria Steinem is an indelible icon known for her world-shaping activism, guidance of the revolutionary women’s movement, and writing that has impacted generations. In this nontraditional biopic, Julie Taymor crafts a complex tapestry of one of the most inspirational and legendary figures of modern history, based on Steinem’s own biographical book ‘My Life on the Road.’ THE GLORIAS (Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, Ryan Keira Armstrong) traces Steinem’s influential journey to prominence—from her time in India as a young woman, to the founding of Ms. magazine in New York, to her role in the rise of the women’s rights movement in the 1960s, to the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference and beyond.
