The Golden Globes are back and Nikki Glasser killed it in an opening monologue for a night “that celebrates the best in film and holds space for television. The Globes aren’t near what they used to be, but it’s still a big public relations pay for studios hoping for Oscar wins and television networks and streamers looking for a potential guild-award or Emmys boost. The bigger winners of the night? “The Brutalist,” “Shogun,” “Hacks,” and “Emilia Perez.”
“The Brutalist” won three awards including Motion Picture – Drama, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Adrien Brody), and Best Director (Brady Corbet).
“Emilia Perez” also took four awards including Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Film Not in the English Language, Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, and Clément Ducol, Camille, and Jacques Audiard won Original Song for “El Mal” from “Emilia Perez.”
Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy went to “Hacks,” beating “The Bear” for the second major awards telecast in a row. Limited Series, Anthology Series, or TV Movie went to “Baby Reindeer.”
Fernanda Torres won Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for the big Brazillian hit, “I’m Still Here.” She is the first Brazillian to win the award.
Demi Moore won the most significant award of her career for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for “The Substance.” Certainly, a nice PR win as she fights for a nomination in the most competitive Best Actress nomination race this century. Sebastian Stan took the Male Actor equivalent for “A Different Man.”
In a mild surprise and packed category, Peter Straughan won Best Screenplay for “Conclave.”
Zoe Saldana kicked off the night by winning Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for “Perez.” Jean Smart took Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for “Hacks.” Kieran Culkin took Supporting Actor for “A Real Pain” while Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama for “Shogun.”
Anna Sawai won Female Actor in a TV Series – Drama for “Shogun.” The FX and Hulu streaming hit also won the TV Series – Drama Globe.
Jessica Gunning took Supporting Actress in a Television Series for “Baby Reindeer,” like Smart and Sanada, duplicating her Emmy win in September. Tadanobu Asano won Supporting Actor in a Television Series for “Shogun” after losing to Billy Crudup at the Emmys.
Jeremy Allen White took Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for “The Bear.” He was not in attendance. In a slight surprise, Colin Farrell took Male Actor in a Limited Series or Made for TV Movie for “The Penguin.” Jodie Foster repeated her Emmy win for “True Detective: Night Country” in the Female Actress category (much to Sofía Vergara’s dismay who jokingly yelled out “Give me one!”.
Motion Picture – Animated went to Latvia’s entry for the International Film Oscar, “Flow,” which upset studio blockbusters “Inside Out 2” and “The Wild Robot.” The Original Score Globe went to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for “Challengers.”
“Wicked” did not go home empty-handed taking the Box Office and Cinematic Achievement award.
