'The Good Lord Bird' Trailer: Ethan Hawke Is A God-Fearing, Insane Abolitionist For Showtime & Blumhouse TV

Sometimes there’s something missing in your life and you didn’t even know it. For me, it’s a bearded, gun-toting Ethan Hawke as a “nuttier than squirrel turds,” Bible-thumping madman attempting to free slaves during the mid-1800s. And thankfully, Showtime is here to help with the new limited series “The Good Lord Bird.”

As seen in the trailer for “The Good Lord Bird,” the subject matter is deadly serious, as the show deals with the issues of slavery in an era of American history where Black people were thought of as commodities and not real people. But yet, there’s so much humor and life in the trailer for “The Good Lord Bird” that you might find yourself giggling along. And that’s not a bad thing. I mean, you probably shouldn’t see a show dealing with slavery and label it as a comedy, but yet, you can’t help but smile watching Ethan Hawke shout the craziest lines imaginable while holding two pistols.

Hawke plays the controversial abolitionist John Brown in the series based on the award-winning novel by author James McBride. Hawke is also on board as a producer of the series, alongside the folks over at Blumhouse TV.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Ethan Hawke stars as abolitionist John Brown in this limited series based on the National Book Award-winning novel. The story is told from the point of view of “Onion,” a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of Brown’s motley family of abolitionist soldiers battling slavery in Kansas, and eventually finds himself in the famous 1859 Army depot raid at Harpers Ferry, an inciting incident of the Civil War. It’s a humorous and dramatic tale of Antebellum America and the ever-changing roles of race, religion and gender in American society.

“The Good Lord Bird” arrives on Showtime on August 9. You can watch the first trailer below.
