Got a Tip?

‘Past Lives,’ ‘Anatomy Of A Fall’ & ‘Beef’ Big Winners At 2023 Gotham Awards

On a wing and a prayer, The Gotham Awards took a chance the SAG-AFTRA Strike would end by the time the November 27th ceremony was scheduled. Their faith paid off. The Gothams became the major kickoff to the 2024 Oscar season as a slew of famous actors, writers, and directors made their way downtown to the annual East Coast indie film soiree.

Celine Song’s “Past Lives” took Best Feature as it solidifies its Best Picture nomination chances.

Just in case, this year’s tributes were director-focused with Ben Affleck (“Air, who strangely was absent with no reason given why), Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Greta Gerwig (“Barbie”), Michael Mann (“Ferrari”), and George C. Wolfe (“Rustin”) all being honored for multiple “icon tributes.”

Lilly Gladstone took Outstanding Lead Performance for “The Other Woman” (“Killers of the Flower Moon” did not submit in any categories). Charles Melton won Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Film for “May December.”

“Anatomy of a Fall” surprised by taking Best Screenplay opposite very tough competition and Best International Feature, a category it will not qualify for at the 2023 Oscars (France selected “The Taste of Things” instead). AV Rockwell was shocked to win Breakthrough Director for “A Thousand And One” (she shouldn’t have been).

On the Television side, “Beef” took Breakthrough Series Under 40 Minutes and Breakthrough Performance as Ali Wong beat her co-star Steven Yeun, among others. In a major upset, “A Small Light” won Breakthrough Series Over 40 minutes over programs such as “The Last of Us” and “Dead Ringers. “

We will update this story and this year’s winners as the ceremony progresses.
