Is filmmaker Greta Gerwig getting sick of being asked about a “Barbie 2? Sequel? Well, the answer could be maybe. The actress, writer, and director was recently on 60 Minutes, and when asked about a sequel, she seemed mildly annoyed about cranking out a sequel and seemed to suggest original filmmaking is still where it’s at for her.
“I don’t know what more could even look like,” Gerwig confessed that she didn’t even know what a ‘Barbie’ sequel would be narratively. “We want to make more films that have the effect that ‘Barbie’ has. I don’t know if it has to be ‘Barbie 2.’

“Why can’t it be another big, original, bold idea where we get an amazing filmmaker, a big budget to play with, and the trust of a huge conglomerate behind them to go and really play? I want to do that.”
In the same interview, she seemed slightly more optimistic about a potential “Ken” spin-off starring Ryan Gosling.
She admitted she “couldn’t stop writing material for Ryan Gosling’s Ken,” and when asked if there would ever be a Ken movie, she said, “I guess we’ll see.” Maybe?
Almost a year ago, Gerwig was singing a different tune and said she hoped the success of Barbie “is the launch of a world and a bunch of different Barbie movies.” “There’s a tone and a humor and a joy, and obviously the world is so beautiful,” Gerwig People at the time. “I want to go back to Barbie Land.”
“Barbie” was the highest-grossing film of 2024, earning $1.446 billion, which makes it the 15th highest-grossing film of all time. Either way, a “Barbie” film is not coming soon. Gerwig has to direct and make two ‘Narnia’ films for Netflix first. Watch some of the interview below.
