A live-action “Gundam” movie has been in the works at Legendary Pictures with director Jim Mickle (“Sweet Tooth”) at the helm. A high-profile actor is now circling the sci-fi project that features humans piloting giant mechs based on a beloved anime series that debuted in Japan back in 1979.
Deadline is backing up a recent report from the InSneider, as they both state that Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria”) is now being courted by the studio for a leading part in the anime adaptation. Bandai Namco Filmworks is also involved alongside Legendary, with Mickle providing the film’s script.
Initially, Legendary had hired Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“Kong: Skull Island”) when the project was at Netflix, but that collaboration fizzled out, leading to this recent version with Mickle taking the reigns.
Some of Sweeney’s other looming projects include Sony‘s female-centric space odyssey “Barbarella” remake that has Edgar Wright attached to direct, who recently wrapped up filming on “The Running Man“ for Paramount. The actress is expected to return for the latest season of HBO‘s “Euphoria,” and completed a new biopic about female boxer Christy Martin, from Aussie director David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”).
Genre projects aren’t that new to the rising star after working on the Sony-made Marvel Comics film “Madame Web,” the upcoming thriller “Eden,” and the horror flick “Immaculate.”
Legendary is also gearing up to reunite with Denis Villeneuve soon on their third “Dune” movie, an adaptation of Frank Herbert‘s second novel, “Dune Messiah.”
We’re still waiting on when and where audiences can watch this live-action “Gundam” movie, but with casting in full swing, that information isn’t far behind.
