CinemaCon is under way this week, with Lionsgate taking the stage today at the Las Vegas event to promote their upcoming slate of projects, including a new feature film adaptation of Stephen King‘s first novel, “The Long Walk, which was published under the famed horror author’s pen name, Richard Bachman.
Frnacis Lawrence (“Hunger Games” franchise) directs the King-created genre story from a script by JT Mollner, and it is heading to theaters on September 12.
King’s novel is set in a dystopian alternative version of the United States ruled by a totalitarian regime. “The Long Walk” follows the young contestants of a grueling annual walking contest. Of course, this somewhat mirrors the harsh world of “Hunger Games” and allows for a group of young actors to play various roles.
The group of actors, many young talent on the rise, assembled for “The Long Walk” includes Cooper Hoffman (“Saturday Night,” “Licorice Pizza”), David Jonsson (“Alien: Romulus”), Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer (“The Return”), Ben Wang (“Karate Kid: Legends”), Roman Griffin Davis (“Jojo Rabbit”), Jordan Gonzalez, Josh Hamilton, Judy Greer (Blumhouse’s recent “Halloween” trilogy), and Mark Hamill (“Star Wars” franchise).
An official logline for “The Long Walk” via Lionsgate:
From the highly anticipated adaptation of master storyteller Stephen King’s first-written novel, and Francis Lawrence, the visionary director of The Hunger Games franchise films (‘Catching Fire,” “Mockingjay – Pts. 1 & 2,” and “The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”), comes “The Long Walk,” an intense, chilling, and emotional thriller that challenges audiences to confront a haunting question: how far could you go?
The producing team consists of Roy Lee, Steven Schneider, Lawrence, and Cameron MacConomy.
This won’t be the only Bachman-era studio blockbuster heading to the big screen this year as Edgar Wright‘s remake of “The Running Man” starring Glen Powell, two-time Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”), Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, and more is being released by Paramount on November 7.
