With “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” on the way for Warner Bros., and two highly successful “Sherlock Holmes” movies under his belt, it looks like the studio is eager to keep Guy Ritchie under their roof, and now it seems they’ve got a massive new franchise idea with his name all over it.
Deadline reports that Ritchie is kicking the tires on a King Arthur series of films, six in all. If this sounds somewhat vaguely familiar, that might be because way back in 2010, he was developing an “Excalibur” remake at the studio (not to be confused with the one Bryan Singer was also working on at WB). Neither project happened, and then a few years later, Warner Bros. tried to get the legend told via David Dobkin‘s “Arthur & Lancelot,” but that movie fell apart too over concerns about the budget.
But this time around, Ritchie is back and the plans are bigger than ever. Joby Harold (“Awake“) has penned the script for this latest blockbuster take on the Arthurian legend, and with a half dozen movies, it looks like WB believes that audiences are gonna want to lots of swordplay. Ut’s not entirely an outrageous notion given the popularity of fare like “Game Of Thrones” — which we realize is not the exact same thing — but is in within the same ballpark of fantasy fare.
Granted, this is all pretty early in the game and nothing is certain, but if you’re been longing for a new King Arthur movie, keep your hopes up, because WB wants one six too.
