Got a Tip?

Gwyneth Paltrow Had No Clue She Appeared In ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

It isn’t a stretch to call Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow the matriarch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She’s been a franchise mainstay since 2008’s MCU-launching “Iron Man.” It’s for that reason that we may have to give her the benefit of the doubt for the confusion she shows in a hilarious clip going viral this weekend, in which “Iron Man” director Jon Favreau reminds her of a brief role she clearly forgot she had in 2017’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

In the amusing clip from the Favreau-co-hosted “The Chef Show,” the two are preparing a dish when the actor-director discusses the show’s origins, saying they brought a crew along while the two shot “Homecoming” in Atlanta. It’s clear right away that Paltrow is a bit lost, and she asks: “Spider-Man?”

“Yeah, we were in ‘Spider-Man’ together,” Favreau answers. “Remember we were in ‘Spider-Man?’”

Paltrow answers with some confidence that they weren’t in the movie, that it must be one of the “Avengers” films Favreau is referring to.

“No, you were in ‘Spider-Man’ also,” Favreau responds, and he begins describing the scene to spark her memory. Peter Parker has defeated Vulture, impressing Tony Stark in the process, and Tony rewards him with a gift symbolic of their father-son dynamic: an early iteration of the Iron Spider suit.

Parker turns it down, saying he’s not quite ready to take the leap to full-time global hero. He leaves, and – right on cue – Pepper walks in from a room full of reporters, saying they need to come up with a Plan B if Peter isn’t going to be announced as an official new member of the Avengers. Paltrow remembers the scene, but apparently, this is the first time she knew what movie it ended up in.

“That was ‘Spider-Man?’ she asks, and the two laugh at her newfound discovery.

If the clip proves anything, it’s how lived-in the MCU universe feels not just to us moviegoers, but the actors are embodying its characters as well. And who can blame Paltrow? The scene certainly feels like one that could have been installed into any part of the universe’s timeline, and the fact it ended up where she evidently didn’t expect it to have now graced us with this candid clip.

And, in her defense, and as many on Twitter have replied to Wieselman’s clip by saying so, the Marvel Studios overlords don’t always reveal to actors what scenes end up in which MCU entry, leaving them to find out later.

Now that *spoiler*, Tony Stark is gone, Paltrow’s has said her good-byes to the MCU. She’s rumored to have a role in the upcoming TV show “The Politician,” the next series from “Glee” and “American Horror Story” helmer Ryan Murphy. Favreau, meanwhile, is putting the finishing touches on his upcoming directorial effort for Disney, this summer’s much-anticipated live-action remake of “The Lion King.”
