Revisiting Stylish Crime Films ‘La Haine’ & ‘Belly’ [Adjust Your Tracking Podcast]

When style becomes the substance…

On this episode of Adjust Your Tracking, Joe and I bring back a couple of golden oldies from the show’s past. We took this week off from recording to enjoy a long, gluttonous holiday weekend. But that doesn’t mean we’d leave you without something to listen to. And so, from the AYT vaults (which you can find here, if you’d like to explore our old episodes), I’ve put together a crime movie double feature: Mathieu Kassovitz‘ scorching, energetic masterpiece from 1995, “La Haine” and Hype Williams‘ “Belly,” from 1998, a misunderstood movie with insanely beautiful visuals that distills the urban crime thriller into a hallucinogenic orgy of experiential moments and sequences. Our chats on both these films fall under our special segment we call HOLD UP, in which we look back at a favorite film and see if it, in fact, holds up.

On occasion, we’ll bring back these older conversations. We hope you like listening, and even better, find these films and give them a spin if you never have. Next week we’ll be back with something completely new as we dive into the rabbit hole of meta comedy and cult fandom in “The Disaster Artist” and “Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond.”

And of course, there’s our episode from last week, where we mostly discussed the good and bad in awards favorite hit “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” and we added another edition to our HOLD UP archives. (For what it’s worth, we still very much enjoyed David O. Russell‘s 2004 existential comedy “I Heart Huckabees.”)
