‘Hannibal’ Showrunner “Very Hopeful” About Season 4 & Teases Potential Hannibal/Will Romance

Though CBS appears to be moving forward with a “Silence of the Lambs” sequel series, “Clarice,” focused on Clarice Starling, NBC had already proven that ‘Silence’ spin-offs can work extremely well on TV with the series, “Hannibal.” Unfortunately, “Hannibal” is a series that was well ahead of its time and was unceremoniously canceled before the story could really be fully told. But that hasn’t stopped fan enthusiasm and demands for a new home for a possible “Hannibal” revival. That excitement for more “Hannibal” episodes is likely going to build based on the new comments from showrunner Bryan Fuller.

Speaking to Nerdist as part of a “Hannibal” digital reunion, Fuller explained that Season 4 is maybe closer than it’s ever been to becoming a reality. The writer-producer remains “very hopeful” about the possibility of a Season 4 despite no news of a platform for the series. But with “Hannibal” now on Netflix, we could be looking at a new lease on life for the cat and mouse game between Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen).

He explained, “The great thing about the ideas that I have shared with members of the cast in terms of where we’re going is that if it takes five years, if everyone is interested in coming back, that’s just how long they’ve been on the lam, and the story will pick up from there and we’ll adapt.”

Fuller went on to describe the look of a potential Season 4 as “sunny and sweaty as compared to the cold harsh realities of Toronto.”

As for what fans might expect in Season 4, if it ever comes to fruition, it appears that the showrunner is really interested in exploring the idea that was teased in the final episodes, with Will wondering if Hannibal is actually in love with him?

“Up until the point where I wrote [that scene], I was aware of the fan community wanting a sexualization between the characters, and I was entertained by that greatly and got a kick out of it certainly,” Fuller revealed. “But I was also trying to be true to [author] Thomas Harris and these characters, and Mads’ declaration of Hannibal as the devil. It’s something I am definitely interested in and it feels like we were on a trajectory. We just have to find the most authentic path for that trajectory.”

He added, “Because of the nature of what would be happening in Season 4 in terms of the grander manipulations that Hannibal has on Will Graham’s mind, I don’t think Hannibal would want to have sex with Will if Will wasn’t in his right mind, and Will won’t be in his right mind in Season 4.”

Unfortunately, Fuller isn’t able to reveal where and when fans might see a new season of “Hannibal.” But perhaps the best thing people can do is go on Netflix and stream the hell out of the series, showing that there’s plenty of interest in the further adventures of a FBI agent and a cannibal.
