Earlier this week, LA Weekly ran a profile on Jay and Mark Duplass, and it noted that when the conversation took place, prior to the second-season debut of "Togetherness," the ever busy duo were already "preparing to write the third season." Well, they can put down the pens and step away from the keyboard.

HBO has canceled "Togetherness" after two seasons. This is hugely disappointing news, not only given that the show was largely critically adored, but also because it’s one of the best series on TV right now. Following a quartet of middle-aged Los Angeles residents trying to get their personal and professional careers on track, the Duplasses mined real depth out of the familiar setup, with ace performances all around, especially from the lead actresses: This might be the best role Amanda Peet has ever had, and Melanie Lynskey is just knockout great in the show. Moreover, "Togetherness" has layers of plot and emotion that is rare in a 30-minute dramedy.
Apparently, ratings just weren’t so great for "Togetherness," which is what ultimately did it in. But surely the show couldn’t have cost that much, and certainly at HBO, sometimes having a quality product can be enough to have it stick around. (Or if it’s just "too big to fail" like the misfiring "Vinyl.")
