HBO Moves On From 'Game Of Thrones' Creators & Kills The Problematic 'Confederate'

Yesterday, it was reported that the two men behind HBO’s massive hit series “Game of Thrones” are taking their talents to Netflix with a new exclusive deal that is said to be in the “nine-figure range.” Well, despite fans being a bit upset over the last season of ‘Thrones,’ it appears that the duo has landed on their feet quite well, but the deal isn’t without at least one casualty — the highly controversial, unproduced HBO series “Confederate.”

According to a report from Vulture, sources close to the situation have said that with David Benioff and D.B. Weiss moving to Netflix, there are currently zero projects being developed with the duo over at HBO. Thus, it appears that “Confederate,” with its seemingly problematic premise, is dead.

For those that don’t remember the announcement from last year, before the final season of “Game of Thrones” was upon us, Benioff and Weiss were expected to team with HBO on a new series that would follow an alternate history where the Confederacy won the Civil War. The series, “Confederate,” sounded like it had the best of intentions, to highlight racism and bigotry through alternative history, but the tone-deaf nature of the premise rubbed people the wrong way.

So, while no one wants to see a series that was in development get cut and people perhaps losing paying jobs, it might be for the best that the world doesn’t experience “Confederate.” However, just because it’s not being developed on HBO, there could always be the chance that the series or the premise can be repurposed as part of Netflix’s film and TV deal with the duo.

Either way, HBO appears to have moved on from Benioff and Weiss, and those upset about “Confederate” are probably happy with this result.
