While it only ran for three seasons — a total of thirty-six episodes — HBO’s “Deadwood” has achieved mythical status. It’s one of the network’s most beloved, cult series and the past few years have seen talk of a “Deadwood” movie turned into something that has real, moving parts. Now, it looks like it’s actually going to happen.
TVLine reports that HBO is eyeballing a fall 2018 production start on the feature-length “Deadwood” film. David Milch has been busy writing the script, and I would presume a greenlight will depend on getting deals signed and schedules sorted out. But every cast member has been enthusiastic about getting a chance to return and finish the show on their terms, but also cautious about getting too excited.
“If it happens, it would be great for us all involved. If it doesn’t, we’ll have those three years and the myth, the legend of TV. We’ll go on, the great show that never got finished,” Ian McShane told us this summer.
In July, HBO Original Programming chief Casey Bloys told reporters at the Television Critics Association there were some hurdles to clear before production was a sure thing. “If we can do it for a budget that makes sense for us, if we can find a director and we can get the cast together — it’s no easy task — we’re inclined to do it,” he said.
Well, it looks like the ducks are starting to get in a row, so keep your fingers crossed.
