So when are HBO‘s biggest hits returning to the small screen? THR reports that network head Casey Bloys had some answers this morning at a press conference for HBO and Max‘s 2024 release calendars. The good news? “House Of The Dragon” returns for Season 2 in “early summer” 2024. But thanks to the ongoing SAG guilt strike, shows like “The Last Of Us,” “The White Lotus,” and “Euphoria” won’t return for their new seasons until 2025 at the earliest.

But let’s focus on the good news first. At the press event in NYC this morning, Bloys confirmed that HBO’s “Game Of Thrones” prequel will indeed be back next year with an eight-episode second season. And Bloys revealed a first trailer for “House Of The Dragon” S2 at the event, too, but on one condition: reporters not give away anything they see in it. Still, that’s exciting new for fans of the show and George R.R. Martin‘s books; at least one big HBO series returns in 2024.
But what about the other “Game Of Thrones” spinoffs in development? Bloys had an update on one of those: “A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.” Based on Martin’s “Dunk And Egg” novellas, the series chronicles the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (“Dunk”) and future king Aegon V Targaryen (“Egg) set about a century before the original “Game Of Thrones” books. With any luck, Bloys hopes production on that series will begin next spring, but that’s pending SAG and the AMPTP reach an agreement soon. As for the other “Game Of Thrones” spinoffs, Bloys said none of the other ones are close to being greenlit at the moment, but they’re still being worked on.
As for “The Last Of Us,” Bloys hopes production on Season 2 will begin next spring as well. Barring delays, that show will arrive in 2025 along with two other much-anticipated titles, “The White Lotus” Season 3 and “Euphoria” Season 3. Also arriving in 2025: the Muschiettis‘ prequel series “Welcome To Derry.” But there are other new and returning titles coming to HBO and Max next year to tide subscribers over. “True Detective: Night Country” was already slated for a January 2024 premiere, but Season 12 of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” arrives then, too. Also coming in early 2024: “The Regime” with Kate Winslet, Park Chan Wook‘s “The Sympathizer” with Robert Downey Jr., and “The Jinx: Part Two.” “Tokyo Vice” Season 2, “Hacks” Season 3, and “Sex Lives Of College Girls” Season 3 also arrive next spring.
And later on next year, “My Brilliant Friend” and “Industry” return in the summer, while “The Penguin” with Colin Farrell premieres in Fall 2024. The prequel series “Dune: Prophecy” is also set to arrive this Fall as it finishes shooting in Europe now.
So, despite delays, HBO and Max still have stacked lineups next year. But it’ll be a while before new episodes of “The Last Of Us,” “The White Lotus,” and “Euphoria” reach audiences. Will other new and returning series be enough to tide HBO and Max subscribers over?
