'Heat 2': Michael Mann Says Sequel Is A "Large" Film & Goes Beyond The Novel

There’s no denying the amount of anticipation that has grown since Michael Mann started talking about a “Heat” sequel years ago. The release of the novel only made things even more fever-pitched. Now, we know we’re getting close to the film sequel, as Mann is teasing how filming should begin relatively soon. And according to the filmmaker, “Heat 2” is going to be a big movie, especially when it comes to run-time.

Speaking at a recent screening (via Twitter) of his 2006 thriller, “Miami Vice,” Michael Mann was asked about the status of “Heat 2.” The filmmaker said he is working on the screenplay “seven days a week.” He also talked about the size of the film.

“It’s large! It’s at least as large as the original, which was two-hours-and-forty-five-minutes,” said Mann. “Some of what the characters do has evolved past the novel itself… So, it’s large.

For those unaware, Mann released a novel version of the sequel a little over two years ago. That book tells the story of the events that happened right after the original crime epic. However, it also serves as a origin story for the characters. Judging by the dual timeline nature of the story, it’s no surprise the sequel is probably going to be a bigger film than the original.
