Occasionally, the inner working of a company are a mystery. And or, maybe they’re not and they’re like a train that’s on already on the tracks and moving too fast to stop. The latter might be the case with Hulu‘s “Helstrom,” a Marvel show and Hulu original that barely uses any of its Marvel connections in its advertising or branding. That’s proably because “Helstrom” might have been an unfortunate causality of corporate consolidation. Essentially, when Disney bought 20th Century Fox, launched Disney+ and cut ties with Netflix and its Marvel properties, power around Marvel Television consolidated around Kevin Feige who launched a whole plan of new Marvel shows on Disney+. Shortly thereafter, Jeph Loeb and a lot of people that ran Marvel TV were ousted, and nearly all their plans were nixed, including many a Marvel show on Hulu which already had “Runaways.”

The sole survivor, aside from some animations still in the works, already in production and too late to stop, was “Helstrom,” which puts the show in a very strange position (“Ghost Rider” was a related show that was killed). The show about family and its demons, is about the son (Tom Austen) and daughter (Sydney Lemmon) of a mysterious and powerful serial killer, Helstrom and chronicles their conflicted family dynamics. But the expectation, is that “Helstrom,” is effectively already canceled and won’t be moving past one season which is a weird way to start a show (perhaps Hulu wished so many people didn’t know how this particular sausage was made, though none of that is official). Regardless, the show looks dark, nightmarish and perhaps not unlike say Fox’s “New Mutants” which had a similar supernatural vibe.
