In the works for several years, Terrence Malick‘s new WWII drama, “A Hidden Life” premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year to rave reviews. Many thought the movie– about a conscience objection in WWII– was a spiritualist return to form after Malick had been arguably wandering around a little bit lost repeating himself with small, low-key indie dramas set in Austin, Texas; movies all seemingly shot from the same cloth.

Today, the Toronto International Film Festival announced Malick’s latest was joining their line-up as a Canadian premiere, (which means it’ll play Telluride), so to coincide, Fox Searchlight has released the trailer for the film that they paid a very pretty penny for following the Cannes premiere.
Our review from Cannes said if the last couple of unfocused years had made you question your loyalty in Malick, “A Hidden Life,” would restore your faith. “Those prone to prostrate before high priest Malick will be rewarded for their devout allegiance to his filmography. We are all of us, blest,” Charles Bramesco wrote.

When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fani and children that keeps his spirit alive. “A Hidden Life” stars August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Maria Simon, Tobias Moretti, Bruno Ganz, Matthias Schoenaerts, Karin Neuhäuser, and Ulrich Matthes. Fox Searchlight will release the movie in the heart of Oscar season on December 13. New trailer and poster below.
