Following the cancelation of Hulu‘s Marvel shows “The Runaways” and “Helstrom,” and Kevin Feige taking over Marvel TV (shuttering it in favor of a new slate of Marvel Studios-produced shows at Disney+), it’s been thought, well that’s the end of that, right? Lest you forget “M.O.D.O.K.,” and what appears to be one avenue of Marvel that Feige seems ok with Hulu still-running with: R-Rated, adult-oriented Marvel animation.

A few years ago, it was announced that Hulu was going to release a number of animated Marvel comedy projects, all featuring C-or-D-list characters, that would all lead to a silly team-up series called “The Offenders.” Eventually, that plan was scrapped but work had already been done on some of the series, which are beginning to trickle out onto Hulu. Earlier this year, we already saw “M.O.D.O.K.” and next on the list is “Hit-Monkey.”
Much like “M.O.D.O.K.,” “Hit-Monkey” is an irreverent look at one of the lesser-known characters in the Marvel Universe. As his name might suggest, Hit-Monkey is actually a monkey who is an expert hitman. And yes, he wears a suit, a la “John Wick.” The new teaser for “Hit-Monkey” shows that Marvel isn’t going to bury the lede here and will focus on the silly side of the character, making sure everyone knows just how strange it is to have a monkey hitman.
“Hit-Monkey” comes from creators Will Speck and Josh Gordon, who is the duo responsible for films such as “Office Christmas Party” and “Blades of Glory.” So yeah, you know what type of tone they’re going with for this new animated series. “He’s a character who is violent and temperamental but also deeply wounded and innocent,” Gordon told EW recently.
Probably the most exciting news about “Hit-Monkey” is how Emmy-winning actor Jason Sudeikis is onboard to voice the mentor of the primate assassin, Bryce. Also in the cast are Olivia Munn and George Takei.
Look, this is a super silly concept, and the trailer isn’t shying away from just how weird “Hit-Monkey” is likely going to be. If you enjoyed “M.O.D.O.K.” (and I certainly did), then you’re likely going to have fun with this new animated Marvel series. Just don’t go expecting it to cross over with the Avengers anytime soon, as Kevin Feige has wiped his hands clean of anything to do with these series and the other remnants of Marvel TV.
