Not sure if you’ve heard or not, but in the world of the “Fast and Furious” films, it’s all about family. So with that, on the latest episode of The Discourse – the show where we discuss film and television reviews, news, and any other items in the zeitgeist that we feel the need to weigh-in on – we’ve recruited an outstanding family of writers.
Robert Daniels (812FilmReviews, Mediaversity), Alisha Grauso (Atom Insider), and Griffin Schiller (FilmSpeak, The 4th Wall) join me this week to discuss “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw,” the first official spin-off in the nearly twenty-year-old franchise. From the humble beginnings as a “Point Break” knockoff to the now-insane mashup of “Ocean’s“-style heist film and crazy “Mission: Impossible“-esque action, the “Fast and the Furious” films have been through a lot.
But, this is the first film to not feature an original member (even Vin Diesel had a cameo in “Tokyo Drift“), and while Dwayne Johnson‘s Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham‘s Deckard Shaw are great spice in the core series, do they work as the stew? Like most things in life, it’s complicated. Our individual mileage of enjoyment varies, but we manage to find similar praises (Vanessa Kirby, an overall sense of fun) as well as knocks (atonal, patchy attempts at humor).
*Note: There is no spoiler bumper on this episode, as the things we discuss none of us deemed to be really spoiler-y. However, for those more averse, we cover a lot of ground, so if you planned on listening and haven’t seen “Hobbs & Shaw” yet, maybe tune back in once you have gotten a chance to see it.*
