While the pile on continues for “The Mummy,” let’s not forget it’s not the only franchise misfire this year. Lionsgate had big hopes pinned on “Power Rangers” (including ambitions to make five sequels), but the film failed to spark either at home or abroad, managing a paltry $140 million worldwide against a budget of $100 million (not counting marketing and distribution). Treating the goofy ’90s property super seriously, “Power Rangers” essentially played out like “The Breakfast Club,” with a bunch of teenagers hanging out and bonding, but in this case, turning into mighty morphin’ ninjas or whatever at the end. It also fits in as many family issues as action scenes, while trotting out a fairly obnoxious product placement for Krispy Kreme to tie everything together. Synergy!
