What’s a good way to make a splash on the Hollywood circuit? For up-and-coming filmmaker Adamma Ebo and her twin sister Adanna, it’s taking on Southern Baptism and giving its mega-churches a satirical twist.
That’s the premise of “Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.,” Ebo’s feature directorial debut. Based on a short Ebo directed of the same name, the comedy stars Sterling K. Brown as the disgraced pastor of a Southern Baptist church who, with the help of his wife Regina Hall, mounts a comeback to reopen their massive church.
Here’s the film’s official synopsis, courtesy of Focus Features:
Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. is a satirical comedy starring Regina Hall as Trinitie Childs – the proud first lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch, who together with her husband Pastor Lee-Curtis Childs (Sterling K. Brown), once served a congregation in the tens of thousands. But after a scandal forces their church to temporarily close, Trinitie and Lee-Curtis must reopen their church and rebuild their congregation to make the biggest comeback that commodified religion has ever seen.
Alongside King and Brown, “Soul” also stars Nicole Beharie, Conphidance, Austin Crute, and Devere Rogers. King and Brown also serve as co-producers on the film with the Ebo sisters, as do Daniel Kaluuya, Rowan Riley, and Amandla Crichlow.
“Soul” had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where Focus Features and Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions quickly swooped up on the film’s distribution rights.
