Every now and then, we get to write a sentence that confounds and excites us. Something so strange, it could either be the worst thing in the world or the best. Well, here’s the latest– Paul Giamatti is set to star in a “Hostel” TV series directed by Eli Roth. Let that sink in for a minute.
According to THR, Paul Giamatti is going to star in a TV reimagining of the torture porn horror film, “Hostel.” The folks behind the original film franchise, writer-director Eli Roth and producers Chris Briggs and Mike Fleiss, are all returning for this new iteration. Adding to the intrigue is the report that this new TV version of the film series will be “elevated” horror. So, maybe it’s a bit more cerebral than the original.
Released nearly 20 years ago, “Hostel” tells the story of a group of young people who go on a trip to Eastern Europe. While there, they’re taken hostage and killed by an organization that allows wealthy people the chance to murder for sport.
Two more sequels were produced, each one being more gruesome than the last. The franchise was released on the heels of the incredibly successful “Saw” franchise and helped coin the term “torture porn” because it was all about showing gory torture of people and didn’t have the strongest of stories.
It’s still unclear what’s going to be “elevated” about the new TV adaptation. In fact, we don’t really know anything about the TV version. What we do know is the Eli Roth is set to direct it. We don’t even know which network/streamer will release it.
