‘House Of Cards’ Final Season Teaser: “The Reign Of The Middle-Aged White Man Is Over”

There’s a point in the new teaser for the sixth and final season of “House of Cards” when you start to realize that the folks behind the series are using this footage as a message to the audience. The teaser is less a preview for the events of the upcoming season and more of a socially-conscious meta-commentary aimed at viewers letting them know that, for the last season of the Emmy-winning Netflix series, things are very, very different.

“House of Cards” has gone through a major makeover since we last saw the series. The lead character, Frank Underwood, played by Kevin Spacey, is now dead, though we don’t know why. In his place, Claire Underwood, played by Robin Wright, takes over the lead of the series and hits the ground running. Spouting off lines like “my first 100 days as President have been…difficult,” “the reign of the middle-aged white man is over” and “it’s going to be different for you and me,” it’s clear that the writers of the show are using Claire’s character to speak directly to the audience. But not in that cheeky Kevin Spacey breaking the fourth wall way. Though, one scene in the trailer seems to hint that Claire will continue to adopt that method of exposition. This is the cast and crew using characters to say, “Yeah, we know there’s been drama but trust us.”

Meta-commentary aside, it looks like there’s plenty of intrigue to get people on board with this final season of “House of Cards.” The footage hints that Frank’s death could have been orchestrated by Claire, maybe. One character actually refers to her as a gangster. There are new characters and returning favorites. Basically, the sixth season looks like a rousing finish to the series. Overall, “House of Cards” Season 6 seems to breathe new life into the series. At least just enough before the Netflix Original fades away forever.

“House of Cards” hits Netflix on November 2.
