‘Igualada’ Exclusive Trailer: The Rise Of Colombian Political Figure Francia Márquez Gets The Spotlight In New Doc [Sundance]

The United States is approaching an incredibly important election this November, and it seems as if our choices for President are going to come down to two incredibly old, wealthy white men. For the most part, that’s been our choice since the country was founded more than two centuries ago. But the upcoming Sundance documentary, “Igualada,” aims to show that grassroots campaigns can lead to real change and upend the political norms.

With “Igualada” set to have its debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, we’re excited to give our readers an exclusive look at the trailer for what could be one of the standout docs. As mentioned above, “Igualada” tells the story of Francia Márquez, an activist-turned-political figure in Colombia. The film takes an unprecedented look at Márquez’s rise, documenting over 15 years, from her humble beginnings to becoming a cultural icon in her home country, and eventually attempting to become the first female and first Black President.

“Igualada” is directed by Juan Mejía Botero, a veteran documentary filmmaker who is probably best known for his work on the feature “Death by a Thousand Cuts.” The film is set to make its world premiere at Sundance on January 21. You can watch the exclusive trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis of the film from Sundance:

In one of Latin America’s most unequal countries, Francia Márquez, a Black Colombian rural activist, challenges the status quo with a presidential campaign that reappropriates the derogatory term “Igualada” — someone who acts as if they deserve rights that supposedly don’t correspond to them — and inspires a nation to dream.
