'Imagine That' Soundtrack Apes Beatles Cover Idea From 'I Am Sam'

The 2001 film “I Am Sam” featured Sean Penn playing a mentally challenged father trying to win custody of his daughter (precocious Dakota Fanning) and a soundtrack of Beatles covers by Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Nick Cave Grandaddy and a few other respectable artist, and what is it’s long term legacy? “Never go full retard.”

Perhaps the new Eddie Murphy Nickelodeon kids comedy, “Imagine That” will fare better aping the same idea with a more safe-as-milk edge? (hey, it’s a kid’s movie, it’s allowed). Mmm, probably not, but there is a lot of Colbie Caillat if that’s your bag plus Landon Pigg who will play Ellen Page’s romantic interest in the upcoming Drew Barrymore directorial effort, “Whip It!,” if you want a teaser of what he sounds like. Best case scenario, this soundtrack introduces your kids to The Beatles?

Hmm, yeah, not so good either. Uhhh, the film is about a financial executive (Murphy) who can’t stop his career downspiral is invited into his daughter’s imaginary world, where solutions to his problems await. The soundtrack comes out June 23 on Lakeshore records. The film comes out June 12.
