SXSW midnight movies often sell themselves on blood, noise, and pure after-hours lunacy, but “Imposters” looks like it’s aiming for an alternate route, building its horror from grief, suspicion, and a premise that starts with intimate loss before veering into something much stranger. The sci-fi thriller will world premiere at SXSW on March 15 in the festival’s Midnighter section, with Jessica Rothe, Charlie Barnett, and Yul Vázquez leading writer-director Caleb Phillips’ feature debut.

The setup is sharp and nasty. After a couple’s baby boy is taken, the desperate mother finds a way to bring him back, only for her husband to begin suspecting that what she returned with isn’t really their son. That is the kind of hook that doesn’t need much decoration — part parental nightmare, part identity thriller, part mind-bender built around the horror of wanting something so badly you stop asking what it is.
Phillips described the movie as starting from a familiar missing-child setup before spiraling into something “completely unexpected,” adding that it’s for viewers who like trying to stay ahead of the twists. That promise tracks with the teaser’s angle and with Phillips’ earlier short-form genre work, including “Other Side of the Box,” which won SXSW’s Midnight Short Award in 2019.
Rothe, still one of genre cinema’s most reliable presences after “Happy Death Day,” gives the film an immediate center of gravity, while Barnett and Vázquez help give the project a slightly tougher, more unpredictable edge. The supporting cast also includes Bates Wilder, Luisina Quarleri, Thomas Parobek, Ian Lyons, Taylor Karin, Lee Bennett, and Declan Bennett, with Thomas Bond, Sara Seligman, and Joe Bandelli producing.
SXSW currently lists “Imposters” with multiple festival screenings, beginning March 15 at Alamo Lamar 5, followed by additional screenings on March 16 and March 17. The film is still seeking distribution, with Blue Finch Films handling sales, so the teaser is arriving at exactly the right moment — not just as a first taste of tone, but as a sales and festival-launch calling card for a movie that sounds built to scramble audience expectations.
