From Harry Houdini to David Blaine, magicians have never ceased to hold audiences enraptured, turn the impossible into possible and spark the pervading question: “How did they do that?” The latter—however—is not solely a part of spectator speculation after a performance. A magician like the late James Randi utilized his craft to demonstrate how charlatans such as Uri Geller, Peter Popoff, and James Hydrick successfully duped individuals into believing they possessed psychic powers. Magic broke the mold. A new documentary entitled “In & of Itself” sets out to show that permeating into the human connection.

The project is rooted in the off-Broadway show of the same name which starred Derek DelGaudio. The production was only supposed to run for 10 weeks. It outperformed that estimate by 62 weeks, grossed $7 million from 560 stagings and attracted a celebrity who’s who list that included Tom Hanks, Kate McKinnon, and Common. Per Variety, DelGaudio said, “I couldn’t be prouder of this film. It’s unlike anything that exists and I can’t wait for everyone to see it on Hulu.”

Helming the original show and this film is a man who has cinematic magic written all over him. Yoda himself—say no more—Frank Oz serves as the director. Additionally, Stephen Colbert and his wife Evelyn McGee Colbert are executive producers on the project.
