Everyone’s life story is full of secrets—whether we like to admit it or not. Hulu’s original series “The Sister” offers a provocative look at how one’s own hidden indiscretions linger. The project, a British production from Euston Films, brings together two respected actors as well as an acclaimed writing and directing team for this highly anticipated event.
This limited series provides another glimpse into the mind of “Luther” creator Neil Cross. The writer’s defining BBC series stands as a dramatic and thrilling triumph—still leaving audiences in awe of outstanding performances from Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson. Acting as a screenwriter for ‘Sister’ gives Cross the chance to personally adapt his novel “Burial” for audiences. This time, director Niall MacCormick is tasked with interpreting the tense themes often associated with the author.
Russell Tovey and Bertie Carvel star as two friends brought together by something they thought left behind in the past. The pair find this unwanted memory coming back to life with a viciousness that threatens to destroy more than just one man’s world. Tovey has been on an interesting career trajectory—many will know him for performances in “Being Human” and the “Doctor Who” universe. What some may have missed is the art-centric podcast “Talk Art” from Tovey; it’s been a successful way for the actor to show off his personality away from complex roles. Carvel also has an impressive reputation amongst the British entertainment industry. His work extends across a gamut of genres from the drama of “Doctor Foster” to the fantasy world of “Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.” The project also stars Amrita Acharia, Nina Toussaint-White, Amanda Root, Simone Ashley, and Paul Bazely.
The series’ official synopsis:
How far would you go to keep a secret? One rainy evening, Nathan (Russell Tovey) is surprised by an unwelcome face from the past. Nathan has never been able to forget the worst night of his life: a party that led to the sudden, shocking death of a young woman. Only he and Bob (Bertie Carvel), an eccentric old acquaintance, know what really happened… and they’ve resolved to keep it that way. But years later, Bob appears at Nathan’s door with terrifying news that threatens to tear Nathan’s world apart. Because Nathan has his own secrets now. Secrets that could destroy everything he has desperately fought to build for himself and his family.”
