It’s starting to sink in that Harrison Ford is hanging up his whip with “Indiana Jones 5.” The 80-year-old actor ends his tenure as the beloved tomb raider and part-time archaeology professor next summer. The fifth installment is directed by James Mangold (“Ford Vs. Ferrari“). Steven Spielberg co-wrote the script and was initially set to direct the final Indy installment, but he couldn’t get passionate about the version he was making and decided to hand off the reigns.
“Indiana Jones 5” will see the globetrotting hero navigating 1969 with the return of Nazis, potentially connected to Operation Paperclip and the space race against the Soviet Union. Also, we’ll visit New York City in the late 1960s, which should be a little bit of culture shock since most of Indy’s adventures occurred before WWII. Thankfully, a wave of photos (see below) has made their way online thanks to Empire Magazine and Disney giving us more of a sense of the film’s setting and new characters.
Joining Ford on this final outing are Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, Boyd Holbrook, Antonio Banderas, Shaunette Renee Wilson, Thomas Kretschmann, and Toby Jones.
A trailer is likely on its way as the Empire Magazine pieces and first-look photos are usually the start of the film’s promotional wave before it swings into theaters on June 30, 2023. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that the CGI in the movie will be used to usher us into the past rather than in messy set pieces like in “Kingdom of The Crystal Skull.”
A spinoff series set in the “Indiana Jones” universe is also in the works for Disney+. We’ll undoubtedly update once Lucasfilm releases official details about it (though it’s rumored to be about Abner Ravenwood).
Check out the latest photos from the upcoming sequel below, which features Waller-Bridge as Indy’s goddaughter Helena and a mystery character that Nazis are pursuing in an action sequence from the past that will see Indy de-aged via visual effects.
