'Ironheart': Shakira Barrera Joins Upcoming MCU Disney+ Series

As of right now, “Ironheart” won’t release on Disney+ until after several other MCU shows, “Echo” and “Loki” Season Two among them. But casting news will help tide over the wait until late 2023 for the show’s release. Deadline reports that Shakira Barrera joins the series cast, which already boasts the likes of Dominique Thorne, Anthony Ramos, and Manny Montana.

Marvel gave no word who Barrera will play, but expect the “GLOW” and “It’s Bruno” actress to have a supporting role in the series. Barrera currently stars as a regular in the Amazon Freevee series “Sprung.” She also stars in the upcoming third season of the OWN legal drama “All Rise.” Other TV credits include TNT‘s “Animal Kingdom,” Showtime‘s “Shameless,” and USA Network’sQueen Of The South.”

Other “Ironheart” cast includes Regan Aliyah, Shea Couleé, Zoe Terakes, and young Han Solo himself, Alden Ehrenreich. The Phase 5 series, which stars Thorne as Marvel’s Riri Williams as the creator of the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man, will no doubt play into the lead-up of the “Thunderbolts” movie, out in 2024.  Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes direct the series, with Chinaka Hodge serving as head writer and showrunner.  Ryan Coogler is also a big part of the series, serving as an executive producer through his studio, Proximity.

Details remain slim on “Ironheart,” but with all of the MCU content coming before its release, Kevin Feige & co. will eventually get around to it. Up next in the MCU/Disney+ pipeline? Marvel’s yet-to-be-titled Halloween Special with Gael García Bernal and “The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special,” premiering in December.
