'Jack Ryan' Series Ending & Spinoff Starring Michael Peña In Development

John Krasinski‘s push into action stardom is an interesting journey. “The Office” star had been mostly seen as a comedy guy, to the point that Marvel passed on him when he auditioned to play Steve Rogers in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” the role that went to Chris Evans instead. Eventually, director Michael Bay cast him in the action pic “13 Hours,” changing the public’s perception, which led to Krasinski being cast in Amazon‘s “Jack Ryan” series based on the beloved Tom Clancy novels.

However, while we’re still waiting on a release date and trailer for season three of “Jack Ryan,” there is a report from Deadline that Amazon is ending the spy series at season four, which is currently filming. Krasinski also produces the streaming project that comes from Skydance and Paramount.

The outlet adds that a potential spinoff series headlined by actor Michael Peña (“End of Watch“) as Clancy’s Domingo “Ding” Chavez is in development, which would be yet another character from the Jack Ryan universe alongside Michael B. Jordan‘s John Clark in “Without Remorse” and a potential “Rainbow Six” movie too.

If you’re unfamiliar with the Chavez character, he was once played by Raymond Cruz (“Breaking Bad“) in “Clear & Present Danger” and could easily show up in the “Rainbow Six” movie as he was featured in the book. Ding Chavez is an expert military sniper recruited by Clark into special operations while also a protagonist in the popular video game franchise “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six.”

Peña previously starred in Netflix‘s hit drug cartel drama “Narcos: Mexico” as DEA agent Kiki Camarena.

It’s unclear why “Jack Ryan” is ending but given how in-demand Krasinski is becoming as both an actor and director, he’s likely looking to do more film work and a series commitment would cause scheduling headaches. He’s also the creative force behind Paramount‘s successful “A Quiet Place” franchise and may end up directing a third main installment that is eyeing a release date in 2025.
