Jacob Elordi has quickly become one of the most sought-after actors in the world. Thanks to a scene-stealing role in “Euphoria,” as well as some acclaimed performances since, he’s seemingly always in the conversation when it comes to the next generation of massive stars. But that doesn’t mean Elordi is going to jump at the biggest opportunities put in front of him. In fact, he’s already turned down one massive opportunity—an audition for the biggest superhero role of them all.

Speaking to GQ, Jacob Elordi talked about his new film, “Priscilla,” as well as talking about his career up until now. And yes, the inevitable questions about superhero films came about. You can’t talk to an up-and-coming actor without asking about Marvel or DC and if they’d be interested. Except, in Elordi’s case, that question has a very simple answer—no thanks.
“Not particularly, no,” Elordi said about if he wanted to take on a superhero role. “I’ve always been told to say a rounded answer or my agent will get mad at me. ‘Anything can happen!’ And obviously anything can happen, but at this stage in my life, I don’t see myself having any interest in that. I like to make what I would watch, and I get very restless watching those movies.”
Even though he has no desire to star in a superhero film, that doesn’t mean studios haven’t called him up. Elordi recalled what it felt like being called to audition for one role in particular—Superman. Apparently, James Gunn and DC Studios wanted him to audition, but his response when asked was simple.
“Well, they asked me to read for Superman,” he said. “That was immediately, ‘No, thank you.’ That’s too much. That’s too dark for me.”
When you look at Elordi, it’s clear why Gunn & Co. would want him to audition. He has that chiseled jaw and look of Superman. But, at least for now, it doesn’t appear that the actor has any superhero hopes and dreams. Maybe that’s because he already found out what happens when you take a job that you don’t necessarily believe in.
You see, before Elordi was a household name, he starred in the “Kissing Booth” films over at Netflix. And that experience—making silly teen-roms—really changed how he chose roles after.
“I didn’t want to make those movies before I made those movies,” he explained. “Those movies are ridiculous. They’re not universal. They’re an escape.”
Though he didn’t want to make the films, Elordi subscribed to the “one for them, one for me” career model, thinking he’d go off and make this silly teen rom-com before going off and doing something he actually wanted to do. Well, that process didn’t play out exactly as planned.
“That one’s a trap as well,” he added. “Because it can become 15 for them, none for you. You have no original ideas and you’re dead inside. So it’s a fine dance. My ‘one for them,’ I’ve done it.”
Some might read that and assume that Elordi is being ridiculous with how he chooses films—turning down easy paychecks and the chance to lead massive superhero franchises. But then again, he’s not struggling for work, starring in the acclaimed “Priscilla,” as well as the lead role in an upcoming Paul Schrader film, just to name a couple. He’s doing just fine.
