Jake Gyllenhaal is about to make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut soon! But maybe not in the way that fans were hoping.
According to a report by Deadline, the Academy Award-nominated actor is in talks to star as the villain Mysterio in the upcoming “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel (it can’t be called “Spider-Man: Prom,” right?). Not much is known about the sequel, as of yet, other than it’ll be the first MCU film to release post-‘Avengers 4’ and will launch the latest phase of Marvel Studios films.
Mysterio is an interesting choice for a villain. If you’ve ever seen the character in the comics, you probably recognize him as the guy who wears a fishbowl on his head. But as comic book devotees know, Mysterio is the alias of Quentin Beck, a master of special effects and illusion. Yep, he’s a former stunt performer and special effects guy, who was trying to make it big in Hollywood but failed miserably and did the inevitable – became one of Spider-Man’s most feared villains.
Honestly, for decades, Mysterio has been seen as a bit of a joke, so it’ll be interesting to see what Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios has in store for the character. One thing is for sure, you can probably expect that the fishbowl will not be part of his costume.
Gyllenhaal is one of the film industry’s most in-demand actors. Last year, saw the release of three films by the actor, “Life,” “Okja,” and “Stronger.” He’s also signed up to star in the video game film “The Division,” opposite Jessica Chastain, as well as an upcoming Leonard Bernstein biopic from director Cary Fukunaga.
Filming for the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” sequel is scheduled to begin sometime this summer. The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man and is once again directed by Jon Watts.
The film will be released by Sony on July 5, 2019.
