With the WGA guild strike now resolves, writing and creative development may begin again on countless postponed projects. And eyes will be on James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s new DCU in that regard, considering the sheer breadth of their franchise reboot. Gunn announced ten total new films and TV shows for “Gods And Monsters,” with his “Superman: Legacy” arriving first, with “Peacemaker” Season 2 also on the way.
And that leads us to Gunn’s first DCU news drop since the WGA and AMPTP agreed to terms. Uproxx reports that Gunn confirms that three stars will continue as their DC characters in his and Safran’s new cinematic universe. And given Gunn’s history in the DCEU and upcoming DCU projects, it’s obvious who a couple of those actors are. “Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller, and John Cena will Peacemaker,” Gunn wrote in an exclusive fan Q&A on Threads. Davis starred as Waller in the two “Suicide Squad” films and also cameoed in Gunn’s “Peacemaker,” while Cena starred in that series and Gunn’s 2021 film.
So absolutely no surprise these two return, especially since earlier this year Gunn confirmed that the TV series “Waller,” centered on Davis’ character, would reach audiences before “Peacemaker” Season 2. Maridueña’s return was also expected since the “Blue Beetle” star hinted that he talked to Gunn about joining the DCU earlier this summer. But Gunn remained mum on any other plans he has for the DCU for the time being, although he did mention that “Creature Commandos“ will start things off next year before “Superman: Legacy” flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
“Nothing is canon until “Creature Commandos” next year — a sort of aperitif to the DCU — & then a deeper dive into the universe with “Superman: Legacy” after that,” Gunn explained on the Threads Q&A. “It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.” And that makes sense since the universe’s development only just commenced again.
So, in the midst of all of the other DCU releases, “Creature Commandos” comes first, then “Superman: Legacy,” then Gunn will start work on “Peacemaker” Season 2. And that series won’t come out until after “Waller,” so slot that show in before Gunns returns to his Max series. Everything else, though? Wait and see, DC fans.
