James Gunn Teases Potential DC/Marvel Crossover Film: “I Would Be Lying To Say That We Haven’t Discussed It”

Before James Gunn took over as DC Studios co-head with Peter Safran, he had loose ends to tie up with the MCU, making “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.” Now, in the lead-up to that film’s theatrical release on May 5, Gunn teases what some superhero movie fan has dreamed about for years now; and, for the rest of us, is the stuff of nightmares.

In their latest issue, Empire reports that Gunn teased the likelihood of something movie fans wonder about: a DC/Marvel crossover film. And Gunn’s take on the possibility? “I’m certain that’s more likely now that I’m in charge [at DC],” Gunn told the magazine, “Who knows?” But Gunn did admit if a crossover movie ever were to happen, it wouldn’t be for a long time. “That’s many years away, though,” Gunn continued. “I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”

And as momentum picks up for Gunn’s grand plans for the DCEU‘s new chapter “Gods And Monsters,” the director doesn’t feel possessive about how the MCU handles his “Guardians” character from here on out. It would absolutely not be disloyal of them to me to continue on in the Marvel Universe,” said Gunn. “I would love to see any characters that remain get solo movies, or join the Avengers, or a new version of the Guardians or whatever.” “Vol. 3” sees Chris PrattZoe SaldañaDave BautistaBradley CooperKaren Gillan, and Pom Klementieff all return to reprise their roles in the new movie. Maybe one day audiences will see those characters fight against or alongside the likes of Superman, Batman, and Booster Gold?

Honestly, let’s hope not. The new DCEU must establish itself before a legitimate crossover could ever be considered. And Marvel Studios is in its own transitional period, too, slowing their output on Disney+ and the big screen. So if a DC-Marvel crossover does happen, don’t expect it for a very long time, and well past a lot of the current MCU stars are no longer part of the franchise.

In the meantime, “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” opens in theaters on May 5, while James Gunn preps “Superman: Legacy” for DC Studios.
