For the first time in the franchise’s 39-year history, Steven Spielberg will not be the man directing a new “Indiana Jones” film.
According to Variety, Spielberg has decided to leave the upcoming “Indiana Jones 5” and Lucasfilm apparently is in talks with James Mangold to replace him as director on the project. As mentioned, Spielberg has been at the helm of every ‘Indy’ film since the series debuted in 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” And up until now, it was just assumed that he’d be the director on the upcoming “Indiana Jones 5.” In fact, he’s been talking about making the film for years. But apparently, the report claims that the director thinks now is the time to pass the franchise over to a new creative voice.
And as far as replacements go, Mangold is a pretty inspired choice. Obviously, many people remember the filmmaker based on his recent, Oscar-nominated films, “Ford v. Ferrari” and “Logan.” Both of these are examples of Mangold creating well-made films that appeal to large audiences. However, more apt to the idea of him directing ‘Indy 5,’ we should look at the underrated “3:10 to Yuma” as proof that he can do period, action-adventure fare. Also, let’s not forget that he’s also proven that he can make pure action with “Knight and Day,” though that film doesn’t have the same acclaim as the aforementioned projects.
Another interesting thing to consider, especially in light of Harrison Ford’s recent comments about “Indiana Jones 5,” is Mangold is also an accomplished screenwriter. One of his two Oscar nominations is for Best Adapted Screenplay for “Logan.” Previous to that, he is also the writer of other films such as “Girl, Interrupted,” “Copland,” and “Walk the Line.” So, since “Indiana Jones 5” still needs some work with the script, who better than a filmmaker like Mangold to offer his services?

We also don’t know how this news might affect the July 2021 release date for the sequel. Ford recently said that everything was looking good for the film to begin shooting in late-spring/early-summer. However, with a change in directors, there’s the possibility that “Indiana Jones 5” might get pushed again. Or perhaps, Mangold is expected to jump in and get production ready for the summer start date? We’ll have to wait and see.
As of now, “Indiana Jones 5,” minus Steven Spielberg, is expected to hit theaters on July 9, 2021.
