At this point, will the negative fanbase associated with the major franchises like “Star Wars” scare off every competent director? Filmmaker James Mangold sure thinks so. He’s the latest director to sound off on the recent trend of toxic fandom.
If you haven’t been following “Star Wars” news lately, James Mangold has been the rumored filmmaker behind the on-again/off-again “Boba Fett” standalone film. He’s also responsible for the last two ‘Wolverine’ films. So, he has a good idea what he’s talking about when he mentions toxic fans.
On Twitter, Mangold posted that if future filmmakers continue to receive the “ferocity” of these so-called fans, the more daring directors are going to not want to pursue these franchises, and instead, you’ll be left with less-than-desirable creators.
“At the point when work writing & directing big franchises has become the emotionally loaded equivalent of writing a new chapter of The Bible (w/ the probable danger of being stoned & called a blasphemer), then a lot of bolder minds r gonna leave these films 2 hacks & corp boards,” tweeted Mangold.
When a fan responded that “they already did,” insinuating that corporate boards and “hacks” have already taken over, Mangold again tweeted a reply, saying, “If you feel that is the case, if u feel the film makers are just corporate tools and powerless, then why bitch at us? In the case of @rianjohnson and @chrismcquarrie, i assure you these cats are not ‘owned’. They actually fight your battles behind the scenes.”
The filmmaker continued by saying that he understands why fans take things so seriously, but wants these people to choose the Light Side over the Dark. “The fervor of some attacks has an evangelical ferocity. Now, I get it cause for many folk, including me, the SW saga holds tremendous spiritual power, similar to a religious text. But we must remember to try to handle our disappointments the way Yoda might, as opposed to Darth,” he concluded.
We’ll have to see if this vocal minority of fandom has any impact on who takes these jobs soon enough. We already know that they’ve scared off Christopher McQuarrie. We’ll see who’s next.
