'Indiana Jones 5' Adds New Writers & Antonio Banderas

Production has officially resumed on James Mangold‘s “Indiana Jones 5” after star Harrison Ford injured his shoulder during fight training, and there has been another fantastic addition to the already stellar cast.  Oscar-nominated actor Antonio Banderas (“Pain & Glory“) has been tapped for an undisclosed, according to a report from Deadline

The trade also mentions that director James Mangold is getting some help on the script as “Edge of Tomorrow” screenwriters Jez Butterworth (“Spectre,” “Black Mass“) and John-Henry Butterworth will be co-writing with the filmmaker. The sibling duo previously worked with Mangold on the Oscar-winning film “Ford v Ferrari” and wrote an early incarnation of the “Edge of Tomorrow” sequel for director Doug Liman.

Lucasfilm‘s Kathleen Kennedy has stated this will be Ford’s final outing as Indiana Jones; given his age, we can’t be all that shocked about that revelation.

The rest of the sequel’s cast consists of Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Solo: A Star Wars Story“), Mads Mikkelsen (“Fantastic Beasts 3,” “Doctor Strange,” “Casino Royale,” “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“), Thomas Kretschmann (“King Kong,” “Valkyrie,” “Blade II“), Boyd Holbrook (“The Predator,” “Narcos,” “Logan“), Shaunette Renée Wilson (“The Resident“), and Toby Jones (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Captain America: The First Avenger“) that was spotted on set in the first wave of set photos.

Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct the fifth installment, after helming the last four films, but exited after multiple hiccups developing a script and has since pivoted to his family drama “The Fabelmans,” which is loosely based on his childhood.

Banderas is coming off his 2020 Best Actor nomination for Pedro Almodovar‘s “Pain & Glory” but has recently gotten back into the swing of action projects. He recently appeared in “Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard” reuniting with “Desperado” co-star Selma Hayek and has joined Tom Holland‘s “Uncharted” film based on the Indy-inspired video game franchise from developers Naughty Dog

Disney is still planning to release “Indiana Jones 5” on July 29, 2022, placing the sequel directly in the path of Dwayne Johnson’s “Black Adam.” Although, one will likely move by the time next summer rolls around.
