According to Deadline, Michelle Williams is in negotiations to star in the upcoming Steven Spielberg film, which is currently untitled, about a young boy coming of age in Arizona. The film is inspired by Spielberg’s own childhood, with Williams lined up to play a character that is inspired by the filmmaker’s own mother, though with a unique spin. And considering this film is so deeply personal to Spielberg, it appears that he is tackling scripting duties alongside Tony Kushner.

This untitled film is the first feature that Spielberg has taken writing duties on since 2001’s “A.I.” It marks only the fourth film in his professional career which has featured the filmmaker’s writing, behind other films such as “Poltergeist” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Kushner has previously worked with Spielberg on films such as “Munich,” “Lincoln,” and the upcoming “West Side Story.”

A formal release date has yet to be announced for the untitled Spielberg film. However, production is expected to begin this summer, which makes a mid-2022 release date a fairly safe bet.
