After a brief detour in the realms of over-the-top action and superhero genres with “Furious 7” and “Aquaman,” respectively, director James Wan’s next film sees the filmmaker goes back to his roots — horror.
According to Variety, Wan has signed on to co-write and direct a new super-secret, untitled horror film for New Line. Due to its aforementioned secretive nature, no plot details were given, but it’s said that Wan will co-write the feature with Ingrid Bisu (his real-life partner).
As mentioned, Wan got his start in the horror genre, breaking out in 2004 with the film “Saw.” From there, the filmmaker went on to direct some staples in modern horror like “The Conjuring” and “Insidious.” He’s also taken his love of scary movies and produced a string of hit films, including the various ‘Conjuring’ spin-offs (multiple sequels and various new franchises, all spawned from his first film), multiple ‘Insidious’ films, and “Lights Out.”
Most recently, Wan scored his second billion-dollar grosser with Warner Bros’ “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa. However, it’s been well-publicized that the filmmaker was going to take a break to direct something more personal before tackling the sequel to the underwater superhero film. It would appear that he’s finally found the project.
There’s no release date set for the film, but production is said to begin in the fall, with a 2020 release in mind. After that, he will begin work on “Aquaman 2” sometime in 2020. But that film isn’t likely to begin production until 2021, as the film has a current release date set for December 2022.
Either way, before the next adventure of Arthur Curry, Wan is going to venture into horrific territory yet again.
