In the spring of 2023, Universal Pictures announced that “Nope,” “Us,” and “Get Out” filmmaker Jordan Peele would be releasing an untitled movie with no details on Christmas Day in 2024. But cut to the end of 2023, and the film, still no details, was taken off the release calendar entirely and replaced with Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu” film. What happened exactly? That’s unclear, but in a podcast interview earlier this year, Peele suggested the writer’s strike delayed him, and that’s fair because, during that summer of 2023, all WGA members were forbidden to put pen to paper, as it were, as part of their strike. Peele still hasn’t revealed one iota of details, but could they include singer/songwriter/actress Janelle Monáe?
In a recent interview with People magazine, Monáe revealed that she’s spoken to Peele about a potential collaboration and is sure it will happen at some point.
Speaking with People about her partnership with AMC as the network’s FearFest host, Monáe said that she and Peele “have definitely spoken about making [a] film” together, as recently as this year. “We texted a few months ago, and he and I both said we’re going to make our movie. So, I think it will happen. It’s just timing,” Monáe said.
Monáe added that she and the Oscar-winner Peele “love each other as creatives.”
“We love the horror genre, we love the psychological-thriller genre, and we can’t wait to work with one another,” Monáe said.
Whether that’s a hint at Peele’s secret movie or something else is unclear. The two already have a little bit of history. Peele used Monáe’s song “I Like That,” from her 2018 album Dirty Computer, in his Lupita Nyong’o-led 2019 horror film “Us.”
While known as a 10x nominated Grammy artist, Monáe’s musical career has arguably been almost eclipsed by her constant screen presence in recent years. Since 2016, she’s starred in “Moonlight,” “Hidden Figures,” “Harriet” and her most recent appearance in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.”
There are still no details on Peele’s next movie, but we do know it’ll be released on October 23, 2026. This date, given its Halloween-friendly nature, suggests that it will be a horror film.
